What is the difference between canvas and cotton?
Canvas, a natural fabric made from cotton, is high on green credentials. It is a tough and sturdy, heavy duty fabric, well capable of withstanding the wear and tear of everyday use. Canvas is an extremely heavy-duty plain-woven fabric used for making sails, tents, marquees, backpacks and other items for which sturdiness is required. The division between cotton and canvas is often by weight for simplicity, where 7oz or above is deemed as canvas. Technically, canvas yarn compared to ordinary cotton yarn is slightly rougher, and tends to have more than two yarn twisted. Commonly known as double-stranded three shares, four shares, and so on. It differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as denim, in being plain weave rather than twill weave. Canvas comes in two basic types: plain and duck. The threads in duck canvas are more tightly woven. The term ‘duck’ comes from the Dutch word for cloth, ‘doek’. We have a range of canvas bags available from stock. With our bespoke range, we can offer a variety of stunning manufactured canvas material, fully Pantone matched and available in different weave patterns and finishes. As we make our bespoke branded bags from scratch, we can mix and match materials for a real wow factor.
